چکیده

To illustrate the spatial resolution of measurements of Mercury’s surface elemental composition by the Gamma-Ray Spectrometer on the MESSENGER spacecraft after one year of orbital observations, we have simulated a global coverage map of the 846-keV iron gamma-ray count rate. The simulated map suggests that distinct geologic units larger than 800 km in horizontal dimension will be discernable when the difference in Fe abundance between adjacent geologic units exceeds 4 wt%. These results imply that the MESSENGER Gamma-Ray Spectrometer dataset will provide useful information for regional geological studies of the surface of Mercury. & 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Variations in the abundances of potassium and thorium on the surface of Mercury: Results from the MESSENGER Gamma-Ray Spectrometer

[1] A technique for converting gamma-ray count rates measured by the Gamma-Ray Spectrometer on the MESSENGER spacecraft to spatially resolved maps of the gamma-ray emission from the surface of Mercury is utilized to map the surface distributions of the elements Si, O, and K over the planet’s northern hemisphere. Conversion of the K gamma-ray count rates to elemental abundances on the surface re...

Analysis of MESSENGER Gamma-Ray Spectrometer data from the Mercury flybys

During its three flybys of Mercury, the MESSENGER spacecraft made the first detection of gamma-ray emission from the planet’s surface. With a closest approach distance of 200 km, the flybys provided an opportunity to measure elemental abundances of Mercury’s near-equatorial regions, which will not be visited at low altitude during MESSENGER’s orbital mission phase. Despite being limited by low ...

Estimation of Lunar Elemental Abundances Using Clementine UVVIS+NIR Data

Many attempts have been made to derive elemental abundances of the lunar surface from multispectral images. A method to predict Fe abundance based on Clementine UVVIS data is presented in [1]. A refined method which also addresses the TiO2 abundance is provided in [2], demonstrating that in spite of issues posed by soil maturity, grain size, mineral content, topographic shading, and glass conte...

Chemical heterogeneity on Mercury’s surface revealed by the MESSENGER X-Ray Spectrometer

[1] We present the analysis of 205 spatially resolved measurements of the surface composition of Mercury from MESSENGER’s X-Ray Spectrometer. The surface footprints of these measurements are categorized according to geological terrain. Northern smooth plains deposits and the plains interior to the Caloris basin differ compositionally from older terrain on Mercury. The older terrain generally ha...

Intense energetic electron flux enhancements in Mercury's magnetosphere: An integrated view with high‐resolution observations from MESSENGER

The MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) mission to Mercury has provided a wealth of new data about energetic particle phenomena. With observations from MESSENGER's Energetic Particle Spectrometer, as well as data arising from energetic electrons recorded by the X-Ray Spectrometer and Gamma-Ray and Neutron Spectrometer (GRNS) instruments, recent work greatly...
